There is a 500 meter path that runs through the grove. Time and space seems infinite once you step into this magical world. The bamboo makes you feel tiny and fills you with awe as you look up and out and see long, strong, bamboo stalks as far as the eye can see. A sense of zen comes over you, too. I’m not sure if it is all the green, or the lovely linear pattern that the bamboo creates, but you can’t help but unwind and relax on this path. It isn’t a hike where you rush through to get to a destination but rather one that you breathe in and enjoy together. The path is long and straight for a good portion so the kids could...

If your kids are very young and need a bit of motivation for your hike or if you are new to hiking and worried they will become bored, a scavenger hunt is just the remedy.

You’ll easily have your children searching for the next item on the list, and you’ll have lots to talk about as you look and find new things.  They will be building their awareness of the natural world and combatting plant-blindness without even realizing it.  It’s an old teacher trick to get kids to learn and to do things all while thinking they are just playing a fun game…!

Scavenger hunts are great for all ages.  We all know kids love them.  Adults seem...

I’ve seen the World’s End, and not only is it nothing to fear, but also it is SPECTACULAR.  Of course, I’m not talking about dooms day... I’m talking about World’s End in Hingham, MA, part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area!

At 11:30 am on a Tuesday, I was perusing the internet doing some blog research when I happened upon a group called Hike It Baby.  I immediately thought, “These are my people!!”  It’s a nonprofit dedicated to connecting families and getting kids outdoors through organized hikes.  I searched the hike database and noticed a hike starting in 30 minutes at World’s End, 15 miles south o...

Blue Hills Reservation is my favorite place to wike.  It's beautiful year-round, full of trails of varying lengths and difficulties, and super convenient to the city of Boston.  With 125 miles of trails to wike, you will notice many posts about Blue Hills Reservation in the future! You can take a look at the trail map here and also a list of suggested hikes with some information about them here.  Wherever you hike in the Blue Hills, I highly recommend downloading the trail map to your use in your "ibooks" section of your iphone.  It's nice to be able to refer to the trail markers without pulling out the entire trail ma...

I'm not talking about blind plants. They don't have eyes, silly!

Did you know that the flower you're looking at might be a trillium plant?  Did you know trillium plants can live for up to 25 years and that it's illegal to pick it in some places? Or it could be a bloodroot flower. Did you know that the bloodroot flower was once thought to cure cancer but later found to cause cancer? Maybe you're looking at my dear old friend skunk cabbage (story for another day...).  Did you know that the skunk cabbage actually has a purple flower with very large petals?  Did you know that you could also be looking at a cactus plant that is...

Hello!  I'm Kelly, and this bundle of adventure is my little wike baby.  I'm on a mission to share my love of nature, fitness, and exploration with my child.

When little wike baby was first born, I had three goals:

1. Spend as much quality time with my daughter as possible.  They are only little for so long, and I'm continually reminded of this.

2. Stay sane by connecting with friends and making new mom friends!  Being alone with an infant all day every day can start to affect your mental health...!

3. Stay active!  Fitness has always been a big part of my life, and I vowed to continue to be in control of my h...
