I am so pleased to announce the winners of the “I Love the Outdoors” summer writing contest for kids!  When school is out, it’s time for kids to let loose.   The carefree days of summer are perfect for exploring nature on their own agendas and for writing what they want!

Wike Baby invited children ages 5-12 to write about their favorite outdoor spots, favorite season, or what they’d change about the outdoor spaces near them.  Many wonderful pieces of writing and drawings were submitted.  Thank you to all who entered!  Additionally, thank you to the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Trailside Museum an...

Congratulations to Lucy, age 3, an honorable mention winner of the 2018 Wike Baby "I Love the Outdoors" Children's Writing Contest!  She writes about hiking Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park through a tunnel to a waterfall.

"I like seeing waterfalls. Waterfalls go into rivers. Little waterfalls have bumps. I like seeing bumps and seeing waterfalls and the shadow is right there. There is the people and the bridge and they are going into the tunnel. The owl is happy because owls are happy. There is the waterfall and the line so people don't go in there. Waterfalls make me feel good. The chipmunks are happy and crazy....

Congratulations to Nico, age 5, who is a winner of the 2018 Wike Baby "I Love the Outdoors" Children's Writing Contest!  He writes about the "Panther Caves" of Middlesex Fells Reservation, north of Boston.

My favorite place outside is the black panther cave. I like it because a big cat was living in it a long time ago. I don't want to tell what you'd see when you go there cause it'd spoil the surprise. You need to go see it.

Favorite Special Places Outdoors

I went on picnic to Borderland State Park, we took a walk in the woods by the lake. Because my grandpa could not walk much he stayed back at the picnic table. We came back from the forest after a long walk, then we played skip ropes, frisbee, we also played with my squishy ball. I had a bubble stick. I ran around in the field making lots of bubbles. Some bubbles floated far far away, some bubbles stayed on the grass. Do you know what? I had a dragonfly sitting on...

Congratulations to Nadia, age 7, who is a winner of the 2018 Wike Baby "I Love the Outdoors" Children's Writing Contest!

Favorite Season

My favorite season is Spring because I found a toad and garden snake.  You can find the same things if you look very very hard.  You will also see a salamander.  A salamander looks like a small lizard.  A salamander is born in the water but lives on land.  When I go hiking, I like to look for salamanders and foxes.  I also like to write about all the animals I saw when I get home from the trail.  I LOVE Spring!!!

Congratulations to Elinor, age 12, who is the first place winner of the 2018 Wike Baby "I Love the Outdoors" Children's Writing Contest!  Her fictional story is based on her favorite special outdoor place, which is real.

Elinor answered a few questions about her piece and what makes her a great writer.  Read her interview before sinking your teeth into her story!

Wike Baby: What real place inspired this story?

Elinor: The real place that inspired my story was actually my backyard. There was a piece of property covered in trees behind my house. They were cut down, and a house was built in it's place, but unfortunately, un...
