That Mama Bear instinct has only come out a couple times since baby’s birth six months ago.  One time was when an off-leash dog came running at baby.  I would have thrown myself in front of that rabid dog if needed.  If he had been rabid.  Or even a mean dog.  Turns out he was neither and just wanted to play.  But that’s not the point...  It’s instinctive to want to protect your child, and when it happens, it feels completely innate.

One way you definitely want to protect your child that may not feel so instinctive is from the sun.  That big, bad, and beautiful sun!  If you’re outdoors a lot lik...

Faster than a speeding bullet.  More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound… it’s not just Superman! It’s a SuperMOM.  And her name is Denise Fanai.

This inspiring woman, along with her husband and a tribe of friends, recently accomplished a camping trip with her twin two month olds and her six year old son. Not only did she survive to tell us all her secrets, she actually seems to feel empowered after taking on such a fun challenge!  I was totally in awe of her and wanted to know all about this experience… and I knew you would, too.

9 months of anticipation couldn’t prepare you for this: your whole world changed the moment your child was born.  It really seemed like you were part of a miracle.  That baby was yours.  You were in awe and in love.

When you got home from the hospital, you were still in awe and still in love.  You still are.   But you were also tired and anxious and didn’t know how to do seemingly anything.  Thank goodness for the internet and that book your mom bought you but you didn’t think you needed.  And thank goodness for the friends who went before you into the brave new world of parenthood.

What if you could watch a lion hunt its antelope prey in your backyard? What if you could experience the search for the big five (lion, leopard, elephant, black rhino, buffalo) on safari while wiking your local trails?   When we came back from our trip to Kenya 10 years ago totally smitten with the “hunt” for wildlife, I realized it’s possible to get the same sort of experience at home!

That’s when I started getting into birds.  Yup. Me.

Bird watching is like being on safari.  You search and listen and sit quietly… and then when you spot one, all the waiting is worth it!  You watch what it does and identify it...

It’s that lush, beautiful time in New England when everyone wants to spend time outside in the sunshine… but if one thing is keeping them in, it’s ticks.   Concerns peak from May through July, when people get more tick bites and tick-borne illnesses than any other time of year.  It’s a common discussion topic and concern among parents.  There’s also a lot of misinformation out there.

I’ve found that part of mommying is worrying—a large part.  We worry about every thing our child does, doesn’t do, might do, or might not do.  When you spend a lot of time outdoors, much of your worrying might be about ticks...

How should you dress your wike baby for the outdoors? Especially when it's slightly chilly this spring or freezing cold?

As explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes says, “There's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.”  Knowing what to wear is actually quite a barrier for some moms who would like to get outside with their child more often but are afraid of their child freezing or over-heating.   Worry no longer!  I came up with these 6 tried-and-true tips for dressing your baby for a wike.  Follow them and enjoy your precious time outdoors with your little one!
